Channel
Television is the smallest of the ITV companies and is based on the island of
Jersey in the Channel Islands. Channel Television is independently owned; its
parent company is Channel Television Holdings. The station began broadcasting
in 1962, and today broadcasts to 150,000 viewers in 58.000 homes across the Channel
Islands.
In 1954,
when the Independent Television Authority (ITA) first came into being, courtesy
of the Television Act 1954, it was probably not envisaged that a future ITV station
would be set up to broadcast to a potential audience of only 25,000 viewing homes.
However, in 1959 it was suggested by a group of pioneers residing in the Channel
Islands, that they could possibly become involved in the new Independent Television
system.
In March
1960, duly impressed by the Islanders enthusiasm, the ITA invited applications
from any interested parties wishing to be considered for a licence to operate
a TV station based on the Channel Islands. The successful applicant appointed
to run the station was Channel Islands Communications (Television) Limited. Two
and a half years later, and after much preparation, Channel Television went on
air in September 1962.
