An
ATV network production, this soap opera was set in a large department store, Harper's,
in London's affluent West End and ran for 32 episodes (each an hour long) for
two years between 1961 and 1963. "Shopping with the lid off", this was
the phrase used in the publicity for the show.
Harpers West One revolves around the lives of the staff of a large department
store in London's West End. A young Wendy Richard plays receptionist Susan
Sullivan. Wendy Richard is probably now best known for her portrayal of Miss
Brahms in Are You Being Served (also set in a large department store)
and as Pauline Fowler in Eastenders. Another notable actor appearing
in the show is Geoffrey Palmer (As Time Goes By).
The
actor and singer John Leyton made a guest-starring role as as Johnny St. Cere
and sang what became a huge hit for him entitled Johnny Remember Me written
by Geoff Goddard and produced by Joe Meek. John Leyton had previously starred
as Ginger in Granada Television's Biggles. EMI subsequentl released
the song as a single and within two weeks it had shot to the number one spot in
the charts.

Arthur Hewlett (Aubrey Harper) and Tenniel Evans
