The Sentimental Agent

Carlos Thompson

Carlos Thompson plays the suave likeable-rogue Carlos Varela in this spin-off series from a Man of the World episode entitled The Sentimental Agent. The idea for the series came from a television executive who saw the potential in Thompson's portrayal of Varela for a series in its own right. The Sentimental Agent was duly commissioned with the proviso that Carlos Thompson's character Varela had to adhere to the original portrayal in Man of the World.

Carlos Varela owns and controlles an import-export company based in London called Mercury International, which has dealings all over the world. Varela is always immaculately dressed, witty and cool-headed with measured responses to situations quite often fraught with danger in his endeavours to eliminate criminal activity from international port

Carlos Varela is assisted by his secretary Miss Carter (Clemence Bettany) and by his valet Chin played by Burt Kwouk. The series ran for just 13 episodes in 1963, it was an ATV production, distributed by ITC. The theme tune for The Sentimental Agent was written by Ivor Stanley and is entitled Carlos' Theme.

The Guest-Stars appearing in the series include Diana Rigg, Donald Sutherland and Warren Mitchell.
